-Are you looking for a great fundraiser idea? Host a canister drive fundraiser!

Canister drive fundraisers are a very effective way to gather funds from the public, although there are a few keys that you’ll need to take into consideration in order to ensure success! To host a canister drive, stop by an array of local businesses, ideally those that frequently deal in cash such as restaurants, coffee shops and gas stations. Speak with the business owner and/or manager to explain that you’d like to place a donation collection canister in their shop. Most shop owners are happy to.

Unfortunately, canisters are very often targeted by thieves, but there are a few strategies that can be utilized as you’re creating the canisters.

It’s best to use a fairly large and eye-catching canister to make it more noticeable and thus, more difficult to steal. Wooden structures can work nicely, as they’re fairly substantial. For instance, you can make a dog house if you’re raising money for a pet-related organization. Or a simple square box with a slot on the top do the trick!

For wooden canisters, you can affix a chain that can be attached to something behind the counter (or simply draped over the counter to create the illusion that it’s chained down. This is another measure that discourages theft.

Remember to paint and decorate the canister. Include the organization name, its website URL and words like “Please Donate” or “Thanks for Your Donation”. You may also opt to print out a batch of business cards that can accompany the donation canister. Include the organization or group’s name, logo, URL, phone number, and a brief explanation about the organization’s purpose.

It’s important to monitor and empty your canisters on a regular basis. Due to the high risk of theft, it’s best to empty the canisters 2-3 times per week, thereby limiting the amount of money that’s lost in the event of a theft. The more often you empty the canisters, the better.

Remember to place a label with your name and contact information on the bottom of the canister so shop owners know who to call in the event it needs to be emptied!
